The American manufacturer SAVAGE is characterized by having an extensive catalog of 17 HMR carbines. One of these bolt-action carbines is the SAVAGE B17 F SR 17 HMR, a small rifle with great precision and reliability. As in the rest of the references of this brand, its name illustrates its characteristics. The F stands for synthetic stock and the acronym SR stands for suppressor.

The first thing that stands out about this carbine is its black synthetic stock, with molded areas and differentiated textures in the areas that come into contact with the hands. The pistol grip has a good angle and bottom stop, thinking for precision shooting.

These characteristics provide it with good ergonomics, although it does not have a rubber butt plate. Obviously it is unnecessary for reasons of recoil, but it is for the extra grip it provides against the shoulder, avoiding any slippage. The stock is completed with two swivel bolts to engage the rings of a sling sling. The finish of this stock is more than acceptable, having a solid construction, which makes it resistant enough to withstand all kinds of abuse and adverse weather conditions.

This carbine features a 10-round removable rotary magazine, similar to the one found in the Ruger 10/22 carbine. As with all chargers of this type, feeding it requires some practice and attention, it's just getting used to it. Although they do provide the advantage of good capacity without protruding from the ventral part of the stock.

The barrel is of the sporting type, with a length of 533 mm (21”), manufactured using the “button rifling” technique, of which SAVAGE is a true specialist. As usual in American manufacturers, the barrel is threaded at its end with a thread cover, in this case the thread pitch is ½ - 28. As we said in the introduction, the acronym "SR" means "Suppressor Ready", ready for suppressor.

The action is simple, with a bolt whose draw is just under 90°, this has a single rear locking lug, which locks the action behind the spindle and freely rotating bolt head. As in the rest of the SAVAGE range of rifles, the connection between the barrel and the action is made by means of a nut, which provides a precise "headspace".

Another element responsible for its good accuracy is its firing system. It is called AccuTrigger, appeared in 2002 for SAVAGE rifles. This is characterized by its ultra-short travel and break like a glass rod, clean and consistent. It has an integrated trigger safety called AccuRelease, like modern polymer pistols, making its behavior simulate a two-stroke trigger. It is customizable by the user, in terms of its weight, from 1.13 Kg (2.5 pounds) to 2.72 Kg (6 pounds).

The B17 models complement the AccuRelease with a safety positioned behind the action, with a two-position slider. This gives you ambidextrous access to safety, visually revealing a red dot when in a fire condition.

The B17 FSR 17 HMR is a carbine with good precision and reliability that, due to its price, is a good option for those who want to enjoy a weapon in this vermin caliber. A good tool to control this type of predator or simply to practice precision shooting.
