For a relatively few years, almost all rifle brands have set out to conquer the most affordable segment of the market. In this sense, SAVAGE was one of the first manufacturers to enable a basic entry step to the brand, in this case led by the range called AXIS. The SAVAGE AXIS is a very economical rifle, designed to attract new hunters who are starting out in hunting or as a backup rifle for experienced users. This AXIS XP variant comes standard with a factory-mounted 3-9x40 mm Weaver scope.
It is an economical and therefore Spartan rifle, but it does not give up precision and reliability. Logically, this price reduction forces some notable tolls with respect to the components used in other families of this brand. The most important being the shooting system, in this case it does NOT use its famous ACCUTRIGGER trigger, but rather a more traditional and simple concept. Its behavior is acceptable, compared to the brand's reference trigger, this one from AXIS has more travel and is somewhat heavier. On the other hand, it has a two-position safety device after the action, unlike the traditional three-position one present in practically all other ranges.
Another element where the economy of the product is appreciated is the stock, it is made of resistant black polymer, with cuts and textured areas on the pistol grip and handguard, to ensure grip with wet hands. In the case of the pistol grip, it also adopts a small stop at its base, allowing for a firm and comfortable grip. Its intermediate length allows most shooters to fit without major problems. The buttplate is pleasantly surprising, with its ventilated and soft padding. The groove design on this buttplate creates a stiff middle area and a soft exterior.
Unlike other competitive rifles, the feeding system is through a removable polymer and metal magazine, with capacity for four cartridges. The magazine, made of metal and polymer, is recessed in the belly of the stock, remaining flush with it. The stock also has two rotating ring holder bolts, to be able to attach a rifle strap.
As for the action, this is the traditional SAVAGE one, with rounded shapes that only at first glance show its robustness. It is machined from a round bar and has an ejection window that is wide enough to provide good rigidity without hindering the feeding through it and the ejection of percussed pods. Although it also has other virtues, compared to open roof designs, such as preventing the entry of particles or dirt into the action.
It also doesn't give up its floating head bolt, which ensures it can self-center during locking, resting evenly on the action bore and making the bolt face have full contact with the entire cartridge head. What sets it apart from other rifles in the economic segment is its incredible smoothness of operation.
The barrel is 20” (508 mm) and has a “sports” contour in all calibers. Made of carbon steel with rifling following the “button rifling” technique, of which this manufacturer is a specialist, one of the circumstances responsible for its good precision. Another feature that makes the rifle precise is the connection system between the barrel and the action, using a nut, which allows establishing an exact “headspace”.
As we have pointed out in the introduction, the difference with the AXIS version is that the AXIS XP family comes as standard with a 3-9x40 mm Weaver mounted and fired at the factory. It is a lightweight (326 g), economical, second focal plane scope with a 1” tube and ¼ MOA adjustments, which is characterized by its tremendous robustness.
In short, the AXIS is a very economical rifle, which, except for the trigger, has the main characteristics that make SAVAGE rifles famous, precision and reliability. A Spartan weapon with the essentials, which will attract many new shooters and those looking for a foolproof hunting tool while spending as little as possible.
